Team Building as Entrpreneur

Most people would think that the best part about being an entrepreneur is having the freedom to do what you want when you want to do it. You don’t have to answer to a manager or a boss; and you can work from the beaches of Dubai whenever you want. Now, while parts of this narrative are true, this is not the norm for every entrepreneur.

Statistics show that most new businesses fail within the first three years and many don’t make it past the first year. The narrative told on the internet about the good part about the entrepreneur life is an illusion. In my opinion, the best part about entrepreneurship is being able to influence others to live in their truth and to walk into their personal freedom.

To be a better entrepreneur, especially if you have a team of people who support you, you must be sensitive to the lifestyles of those around you and you must focus on creating a culture of “we” no matter what. To build a business that you love, you need to input of others to give you a well-rounded perspective on bringing your vision to fruition.

As an entrepreneur, your vision was given to you to cast, not the world. So do not expect everyone to feel the same way you do all the time about your business endeavor. You have to be excited and passionate about what you have to offer the world, and in turn, those who are connected to you will grab hold of some of your ideals and be ready to help you execute. As a leader, you have to know the work styles, personalities, dreams and goals of those around you. No, everyone you work with will not be the same nor will they share values and ideals. Your position as the leader and as the individual with the most influence is to bring everyone together to make use of the best, and sometimes, the worst, parts of the team to make something beautiful.

Don’t be afraid to get in the trenches with your team to guide them and to do the dirty work. They’ll be more apt to support you and your decision when they know that you have their best interests at heart and that it’s not always about you as the leader. Build trust amongst your support team. Allow them to see who you are in business and who you are as a person. You can still be in charge and show your humanity at the same time.

Society tells us that money is power. I say that influence is power. If you want to be able to sway the thoughts, actions and opinions of those who are assigned to help you along in your journey, you have to take control over your ability to influence people. Own your power and walk in it daily.
